PEACE II
The EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland (2000 – 2006) - known as the PEACE II Programme - was a distinctive European Union Structural Funds programme. The overall aim of the PEACE II Programme was to reinforce progress towards a peaceful and stable society and to promote reconciliation. It was intended to collectively assist Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland to address the legacy of violence of the recent past and to take advantage of opportunities arising from the peace process.
It had a total financial allocation of €994,566,437 of which €609,000,000 was the EU contribution.
A series of reports demonstrate how the objectives were met and the impact the PEACE II Programme has had on the development of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland.
INTERREG IIIA
The Ireland/Northern Ireland INTERREG IIIA Community Initiative Programme was designed to support cross-border co-operation, social cohesion and economic development in Northern Ireland and the six border counties of Ireland: Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Louth, Monaghan and Sligo.
The programme’s objective was to address economic and social disadvantage caused by the existence of the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland by promoting the creation of cross-border networks involving and benefiting local communities.
The programme had a total allocation of €182.7 million including 25% of match funding from Member States. A final report demonstrates how the objectives were met and the impact the INTERREG IIIA Programme has had on Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland.
