Warrenpoint Old Town Dock Restored

06 November 2006

The restoration of the Warrenpoint Old Town dock area marked the culmination of a two-year major cross border construction project, which was part-funded through the European Union’s INTERREG IIIA Programme, with support funding from Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Transport in the Republic and the Warrenpoint Harbour Authority.

The project includes the construction of a new depuration plant at the port for the purification of mussels. Pat Toal, DARD Permanent Secretary, jointly re-opened the development with Ms Julie O’Neill, his Irish counterpart. The project provides a safe, practical, state-of-the-art facility for the landing and purification of mussels following several tragic, fatal incidents in Carlingford Lough. The re-development of the dock has also attracted considerable local community interest and its visible location, so central to the town, makes it a potential tourist attraction.
