Northern Periphery Programme

The Northern Periphery Programme aims to help peripheral and remote communities on the northern regions of Europe to develop their economic, social and environmental potential.
This will be achieved by supporting innovation, business competitiveness, and accessibility, the sustainable development of community and natural resources, and cultural heritage.
Two priorities have been defined based on the visions and objectives of the Northern Periphery Programme 2007-2013. Each project that applies for funding must address one of these priorities:
Priority 1: Promoting innovation and competitiveness in remote and peripheral areas
1.1 Innovation, Networks and Competitiveness
To promote competitiveness by increasing and developing the capacity for innovation and networking in rural and peripheral areas.
1.2 Accessibility
To facilitate development by the use of advanced information and communication technologies and transport in the programme area.
Priority 2: Sustainable development of natural and community resources
2.1 Environment as an asset in the periphery
To strengthen the synergies between environmental protection and growth in remote and peripheral regions.
2.2 Urban-rural development and promotion of heritage
To improve sustainable development in peripheral regions by strengthening urban-rural relations and enhancing regional heritage.
Eligible Regions

The eligible regions are: Parts of the Member States of Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom (Scotland and Northern Ireland) - in cooperation with the Faroe Islands, Iceland , Greenland and Norway. Note: Northern Ireland – excludes Belfast and Greater Belfast. Ireland - Nine west coast counties
Minimum number of countries needed to form a partnership
Three participating partners from three countries, one of which must be a Member State of the EU.
ERDF available
This programme has €45.2 million available. €35.1 million funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and €10.1 million ERDF equivalent (from Non Members States).
Grant Rate
The Grant Rate for this programme is 60% for Member States and 50% for Non Member States.
Who can apply?
Partners from all sectors of society can participate in the programme, including regional and local authorities, national and regional development organisations, research and educational institutions and the private sector.
To be considered eligible for funding, a project must concentrate on issues that require transnational cooperation and are of relevance to the characteristics and priorities of the programme area. A project should demonstrate its innovativeness and result in the development of a product or a service through transnational cooperation.
Working Language
The working language of the Northern Periphery Programme is English.
