PEACE Programme (1995-2020)
The PEACE Programme is unique across Europe. It was created in 1995 as the direct result of the European Union's desire to support the burgeoning peace process. Since then it has supported tens of thousands of projects which have reinforced progress towards a more peaceful and stable society. Examples of these projects can be found here.
To date the Programme has committed approximately €2.26 billion worth of funding to Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland. This funding has been used to promote social and economic stability in the region by assisting actions which promote cohesion between divided communities.
The PEACE Programmes have evolved over each programming period and several hundred thousand people have participated in cross-border activities including development of border region SMEs and social economy enterprises; community-based organisations leading projects on reconciliation and cultural understanding; as well as cross-border projects focusing on skills learning and training.
